Bonnie Sutton elected by the VirginiaCAN Board of Directors to be President. At the May 21st meeting of the VirginiaCAN Board of Directors, the Board elected Bonnie to be President. Her term begins July 1. Bonnie is the President and CEO of the Access Scholarship Foundation in Norfolk. The current President, Barry Simmons has been elected to be the National Chair for the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Barry is the Director of University Scholarships and Financial Aid at Virginia Tech.
Mike Hawkes Honored by NCHELP
NCHELP announced at their Spring Convention last week that Mike Hawkes was a recipient of the Jean S. Frohlicher Outstanding Service Award. Mike was honored for his work on the Common Review Initiative. The award recognizes Jean Frohlicher’s life-long commitment to making postsecondary dreams a reality for millions of students and her never-ending contributions to NCHELP. The award is presented to an individual whose efforts and accomplishments are consistent with the qualities Jean exemplified. Mike is the Director of Government Affairs at ECMC, the designated guarantor of FFELP loans for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Mike is one of the architects of VirginiaCAN, and a member of the VirginiaCAN Board of Directors.

The Virginia College Access Network (VirginiaCAN) is an organization of college access providers across Virginia. VirginiaCAN member organizations share a common goal - to enhance postseconary education access and attainment for residents of Virginia.
While the Commonwealth of Virginia has higher levels of educational attainment than some states, as the chart below shows almost 43 percent of Virginians age 25 and older have not pursued education beyond high school. VirginiaCAN member organizations, many having a focus on serving populations traditionally underrepresented in higher education, offer a variety of services to help Virginians learn after high school.
