Section 504/AVID Instructional Specialist, Virginia Beach City Public Schools
Eric Hairston has twenty-seven years of school counseling experience and has served as a Professional School Counselor (middle, high, community college, and four year college), School Counselor Director, and an AVID Counselor. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college preparatory program designed to help underrepresented populations prepare for admission to 4-year colleges and universities. Hairston worked directly with the schools, administrators, and teachers at the five GEAR UP schools. Hairston provided professional development to teachers in the basic GEAR UP Elective Class and trained high school counselors throughout the United States on the role in helping underrepresented populations meet the rigorous requirements of post-secondary education.
Hairston is currently a Section 504/AVID Instructional Specialist with Virginia Beach City Public Schools. He holds a graduate degree from Hampton University in Counseling-College Student Development and an undergraduate degree from Shaw University in Intermediate Education. Hairston is a past board member for Project Discovery in Virginia and currently is a board member for Virginia College Access Network (VCAN). He is a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and member of the Hampton-Newport News (VA) Alumni Chapter.
