What are the steps necessary to start a program?

• Have you determined the type of program you want to start?

• A classic access program, with direct contact with secondary school students, generally in their schools? 

• A resource center, generally located in a public access location.

• A web based program

• An event based program

•   Is the program under the auspices of an existing organization, or will you have to start a new organization?

• Creating a new non-profit organization

• SCC documentation

• Articles of Incorporation Application (Virginia non stock corporation)

• SCC Charter fees

• SCC Annual filing

• By Laws

• Filing for an Employee Identification Number (EIN) with the IRS

• Applying for Tax Exempt Status (through the IRS)

• Annual Filings

• SCC

• IRS: 990

• IRS: UBIT

•   How will you raise funds?

• Make a list of the top ten influential people in your community.  Consider contacting influential people in the following areas:

• Government

• Banking

• Education

• Faith

• Business

• Not-for-Profit

• Media
